Kew Horticultural Society Home

History

KHS was founded in 1938 and (because of an interruption during the war) the Diamond Jubilee was celebrated with the 60th Annual Show in August 2004. On the Saturday of August Bank Holiday, Kew Green comes alive with stalls selling food, plants, books and bric-a-brac, which form a great circle in front of the marquee. Inside the marquee are all the displays of fruit, vegetables, flowers, jams, cakes and crafts ready to be judged and admired, prior to the prizegiving and the grand auction of produce. Over 20 cups and medals stand ready to be won., and the identity of the prizegiver - which generally remains a secret until the last minute - has ranged from household names such as David Attenborough, Magnus Magnusson, Richard Mabey and Baroness Tonge of Kew to successive Directors of Kew Gardens and prominent figures in local horticulture.
